Jeep Wrangler Tops 2017 American-Made Index

Does buying American mean much to you, or influence your purchasing decisions? According to a survey conducted this June, as many as 25 percent of consumers will only spend their money with an American manufacturer.

Yet with the globalization of the auto industry, what does an "American manufacturer" even mean?

The American-Made Index (AMI) considers vehicle models based on five factors:

  • Assembly location
  • Domestic parts content
  • Factory employment per vehicle
  • Engine origin
  • Transmission origin

Based on these factors, the Jeep Wrangler quickly rises to the top of the index. This iconic SUV has been built in Toledo for generations, and 74 percent of its components are domestically sourced—including all engine and most transmission options.

The Wrangler is one of the most respected off-roading SUVs on the market, especially its high-end trims with specialized transmissions designed for rock crawling. Even the most basic, entry-level Wrangler is highly capable over steep mountain roads, and through deep mud and snow.
